Arguing to Save Your Life

Think about how you would argue if you had to save your life in a logical non begging fashion.

Okay, most of us don't have to argue for our lives in terms of breathing, but we do have to set boundaries everyday for how people can treat us.

Sometimes, for me, these boundaries take the form of letters. More than once in my life, I have written a letter to help get things done. I actually got one poor fellow fired, but he had been harassing me for a long time. I presented my argument in a very logical fashion backed with facts and evidence. Come to find out they had been wanting to fire him for a long time, but no one had every bothered to write a letter.

I wrote another letter this week, arguing to have the company responsible fix my air conditioner.

Sometimes these letters in life are necessary, to set boundaries, to get thing done, to protect the innocent.

Have you every written one of these letters?

Is there one you need to write?

  1. Hi Professor,

Yes I have had to write once of those letters before. A matter of fact I had to write last year to my son school. He had some kids picking on him and he also received several threats and the school wasn't doing anything about it. So I wrote a letter to the school board and it was taking care of right away with one of the boys that were threating my son. He was taken out of the school and put into a reform school or something like that.

I really hope you get your a/c fixed soon. We have had problem with our too since we bought our house. And our a/c is brand new too. I will be writing them a littler this year if it messes up again.

  2. This is almost a daily occurrence for me in Human Resources. There are new people that come to the Hospital almost daily and are in need of guidance. I must collect rosters of people that are trained to sponsor the new oncoming personnel.

For about a month the manager, who I collect the rosters from, was not in contact with me. Every time I sent him an email, telephone call and even went in person he was missing. I wrote a letter of no confidence to his work and my command. In a week he gave me all the material I need for updating my rosters.

If something goes wrong in my program I could be removed from my position and my life would change a lot.

  3. I've had to write a few letters too in my time. One, similar to Rachel's, regarding a boy who was not fit to be in the main stream class in my daughter's elementary school. He was violent and abusive and needed to be removed. Myself and one other parent complained and the situation was rectified.

Another time was when both of my girls were in high school and were having problems with a gang of kids. I asked for them to be transferred to another school. In the end they were transferred but it took a lot more action then the letter!

I haven't recently had to write any letters in regards to problems, which is nice, and I never have to write about my A/C as my husband owns the company!! :) We are very well taken care of!! Wish you lived closer, he'd make things right for you!

  4. I haven't had to write any letters like that yet but reading all these stories it sounds like it does get the job done in the most responsible way instead of calling and getting all worked up for nothing! My son just started school and I hope I don't have to write any letters to the school like the other classmates stated but I am pretty sure I will! Well Professor I hope your A/C gets fixed and I am pretty sure your letter will do the trick this time!

you wanted me to tell how I felt about the report I was doing . Well I felt that smoking in the car with a child was alright not think it was agaist the law. Well I found out differently. you can be fined for doing so, I want to argue that this is my personal car, I paid for it and I should be able to do what I want and when I want in my own car. But then I also feel that they are so right because the child has no way of speaking up for themselves and this is so wrong for me as an adult to think the way I have. These children have rights and they should not be force to be expose to second hand smoke . I think I have found some good things to do my report on and I will be looking for more thing that will make my report a lot better.
